How the 160 cm rule works
Add height, width and depth. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, a bag over 160 cm (63 in) needs a free seat reservation; over 250 cm (98 in) it can’t board. Everything else is untouched.
For scale: the standard airline checked-bag limit is 62 in (158 cm), just under the line. The bags that cross it are 28-inch cases and up. Our default above is a typical 28″ case at 77×52×32 cm: 161 cm, over by one centimetre. That is why you measure. Sports equipment, musical instruments and strollers are exempt from the reservation rule. Full background in our Shinkansen oversized baggage guide.
Typical suitcase sizes vs the 160 cm rule
Up to 26 inches you are almost always fine. At 28 inches it is a coin flip; at 30 inches and up, reserve.

How to reserve the oversized-baggage seat
Pick “seat with oversized baggage area” when you book: on Smart EX at seat selection, at a ticket machine or office, or on the JAPAN RAIL PASS reservation site. It costs the same as any reserved seat.
These are the last-row seats; your bag rides in the space behind your seatback. There are only a few per car, so book them with the ticket, not later. Since July 2025 the deck luggage corners on Tokaido and Sanyo trains are open shelves for bags up to 160 cm, no reservation — a trial JR Central and JR West run until further notice.
Shinkansen luggage rules by line
The reservation rule exists only on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu lines. The northern lines (Tohoku, Hokkaido, Hokuriku, Joetsu, Yamagata, Akita) have no oversized seats: any bag within 250 cm and 30 kg rides free, first come, first served.
| Bag size | Tokaido · Sanyo · Kyushu · Nishi-Kyushu | Tohoku · Hokuriku · other northern lines |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 160 cm (63 in) | No reservation, no fee. Rack, deck shelf or at your feet | No reservation, no fee |
| 160–250 cm (63–98 in) | Reserve a “seat with oversized baggage area” (¥0 extra). Without it: ¥1,000 on board | No reservation exists. Free; storage first come, first served |
| Over 250 cm, a side over 2 m, or over 30 kg (66 lb) | Not allowed — forward it | Not allowed — forward it |
| Number of bags | Up to 2 free per person, plus a small personal item | Up to 2 free per person, plus a small personal item |
When forwarding beats carrying
Ship the bag when it can’t board (over 250 cm or 30 kg), when you have two big cases, or when stairs, subway transfers or a busy Friday wait at the other end. Otherwise carrying is free and forwarding only buys comfort.
