October or November in Japan? How to Pick Your Fall Window (2026)

Pick the second half of November for a first, classic-Japan trip — that's when Kyoto and Tokyo actually turn red and the rain drops off. Pick mid-to-late October if you'd rather have warm days, thinner crowds at the sights and cheaper rooms — cheaper, not emptier: Kyoto's hotels run just as full. And don't pay a yen to move your trip around China's Golden Week: in 2026, with Chinese arrivals down by more than half, that fear is more outdated than ever.

The short answer

November — specifically the second half — wins for a first trip built around classic Japan: Kyoto maples, crisp dry air, postcard light. October wins on comfort and cost: warmer days, no foliage crush, and Kyoto hotels about 15% cheaper than in November on the city's official data. The whole decision comes down to three things — heat, rain and leaves — and all three flip in November's favor by mid-month.

For 2026 the calendar is running late. Japan Meteorological Corporation's October 1, 2026 forecast puts full colour at November 28 in Tokyo and December 11 in Kyoto — both within a week of normal — and November 4 in Sapporo, a week behind. Full colour arrives at the end of the viewing window, not the start, which is why the second half of November still works in the cities. The Japan Weather Association (tenki.jp, October 14) and Weathernews (October 8) both call the season normal or later, with the lowland cities most likely to run late; the next rounds land in late October and early November. Early October: still summer (the data)

On paper, early October in Tokyo averages a 23.7°C high and a 16.7°C low (JMA normals, 1991–2020). In practice it runs hotter: the last three early Octobers came in 1.3–2.6°C above that normal high, which puts real-world early-October afternoons around 25–27°C with leftover humidity. Mid-November, by the same normals, reads 16.6°C by day and 8.8°C at night — light-jacket weather, zero sweat. If you wilt in heat, the first week of October is late summer, not autumn.

The slide is steep and fast: Tokyo's normal high drops from 23.7°C in early October to 20.4°C by late October, 18.6°C in early November and 14.9°C by month's end. Choosing between these months really means choosing a point on that slope — every week you wait costs about a degree of daytime warmth and buys you drier, crisper air. Kyoto tracks Tokyo within a degree or two, on the warm side.

China's Golden Week Oct 1–7: how much it actually matters (in 2026: less than ever)

Very little. China's National Day Golden Week ran October 1–7 in 2026, per the State Council's official holiday calendar. In normal years it added a real but localized surge — tour buses at Ginza, Mt. Fuji viewpoints, big-name Kyoto temples. But since Beijing's late-2025 advisory urging citizens to avoid Japan, the wave has collapsed: Chinese arrivals fell 56.4% year on year in the first half of 2026 (2.06 million, JNTO figures), enough to drag Japan's total arrivals to their first decline in five years.

We keep seeing travelers on Reddit close to rebooking entire trips over "the Chinese holiday." Don't. Even before 2026 the effect was concentrated in a short list of photo spots, and hotels barely moved for Western-style bookings. This year the wave is less than half its former size. If your dates land on October 1–7, you'll notice Japan's own weekend crowds more than China's. Change fees would be money burned.

Rain, typhoons and daylight

November is the drier, safer month, and it isn't close. Tokyo's October rain normal is 235mm — front-loaded, with 103mm falling in the first ten days — against just 96mm across all of November. Typhoons tell the same story: on average 1.7 approach Japan in October versus 0.5 in November, and landfalls go from 0.3 in October to none at all: across the whole 1991–2020 normal period, no typhoon made landfall on Japan in November (JMA). November's tax is the light. Tokyo sunsets slide from about 5:25pm on October 1 to roughly 4:30pm by late November. That's not trivia — it reshapes your days: gardens and viewpoints go in the morning, and evenings go to the temple illuminations Kyoto runs in late November precisely because it gets dark early.

Crowds and prices month vs month

October is the cheaper month, not the emptier one; late November is Japan's second peak season. Two domestic long weekends anchor the crowd calendar: Sports Day made October 10–12 a three-day weekend in 2026 (in 2027 it falls on October 9–11), and Labor Thanksgiving Day makes November 21–23 one — landing exactly on Kyoto's foliage peak, the busiest and priciest window of the entire autumn. Culture Day, November 3, falls on a Tuesday in 2026, so it makes no official long weekend. Kyoto, which publishes monthly hotel data, shows the price gap: its main hotels averaged ¥24,859 a room-night in October 2025 against ¥29,085 in November, about 15% less. Rooms were not easier to find, though: October occupancy hit 90.0%, a post-pandemic high, against 86.9% in November (Kyoto City Tourism Association). The practical consequence: a late-November Kyoto trip needs hotels booked months ahead, especially anything touching the November 21–23 weekend. October is more forgiving on price, not on availability: rates stay lower, but Kyoto's hotels were fuller in October 2025 than in November, so book as early as you would for November. Both weekends are also all-reserved Nozomi periods: every Tokyo–Hakata Nozomi ran with no non-reserved cars on October 10–12, and will again on November 21–23, 2026 (JR Central), so book the seat rather than planning to walk on. Fixed-date autumn tickets behave like the hotels: the Sagano Romantic Train is the classic peak-foliage sell-out.

The decision tree

Work through these in order and stop at the first line that's true for you. It settles the question in under a minute; if neither month survives, our month-by-month guide covers the rest of the year.

• Kyoto and Tokyo autumn colors are the point of the trip → second half of November. Non-negotiable: in October those cities are still green.
• You want cool weather but can't stretch to late November → first half of November. You'll catch early color and 17–18°C days.
• Budget first, foliage optional → mid-to-late October. About 15% off November hotel rates on Kyoto's official data, and typhoon risk fades by the week.
• Crowds bother you more than heat → mid-to-late October, skipping the Sports Day long weekend (October 9–11 in 2027).
• Your dates are locked on October 1–7 → keep them. China's Golden Week in 2026 is not worth a change fee.
• You want leaves in October anyway → go north or up: Hokkaido, the Tohoku highlands and the Japan Alps peak in October.

The closest version of that from Tokyo is Nikko, whose highlands turn in early October and whose shrines turn in November — day trip or overnight, and on which dates, is the only real decision.
