The Sagano Romantic Train is a 25-minute, 7 km ride along the Hozu Gorge on the old Sanin line. It costs ¥880. It also sells out for most of November within minutes of the tickets going on sale, and every autumn a wave of travellers finds out the hard way that a reseller booked months ahead cannot conjure a seat the railway has not released yet. Here is the actual mechanism, with the dates and times.
The short answer
Buy on the railway's own site, at midnight JST exactly one month before your ride date. That is the first moment any seat exists. No agency, no hotel concierge and no OTA can get one earlier, because the inventory is not there to sell. Set an alarm, log in first, then book: 09:00 and the open car go in the first minutes on November dates. ¥880 per person, one way.
How official booking actually works
Every seat on the train is reserved. Online sales open at 00:00 JST on the same calendar date of the previous month — for a 20 November ride, that is midnight at the start of 20 October. Sales run through the railway's site (the "Reserve tickets here" button), which hands you a QR code in your account. You can book up to 8 people in one order and pick the exact car and seat number.
Things worth knowing before you sit at your laptop at 16:00 the day before in New York:
- Refunds are free until 23:59 the day before travel. After that, nothing: no refund, no train change, not even for rain.
- You can change your seat up to three times on the same train, also until 23:59 the day before. You cannot change the date or the departure time — you refund and rebook.
- Groups of 15 or more book through travel agencies, from a year out to a month out. That allocation comes off the top, which is part of why single dates vanish.
- The JR Pass does not cover this train. Neither does Seishun 18. It is a separate private railway.
- Same-day tickets are sold at the counters at Torokko Saga (from about 08:35), Torokko Arashiyama (08:50) and Torokko Kameoka (09:10). Not at Torokko Hozukyo. From 8 November to 7 December all three open at about 08:35.
Which dates sell out
Mid-November to early December is the crunch. The railway's own guidance puts the foliage along the line at mid-November to early December, and the operating plan agrees: November 2026 has no closed day at all and runs extra evening trains every single day. Late March to early April, for the cherry tunnel, is the second pinch. A Tuesday in late June, by contrast, you can usually walk up and buy. The base timetable is 8 round trips: down trains leave Torokko Saga at 09:02 and then hourly to 16:02; up trains leave Torokko Kameoka at 09:30 through 16:30. On busy dates the railway adds Sagano 81/82 (17:10 from Saga, 17:43 from Kameoka), and on the very busiest it adds Sagano 91/92 (18:26 and 18:59). Those evening runs are the light-up service through the illuminated gorge.

Seat strategy: car 5, and which way you face
Car 5 is "the Rich car": no window glass, a glass roof, an open floor, sitting right behind the diesel locomotive. It is the seat everyone wants and the first to go. Select "Car No. 5" in the booking flow. The catch is written into the rules: in rain you get wet, umbrellas are banned on board, and there is no same-day refund, seat change or train change because of weather. Bring a rain jacket or take a standard car.
Seats are four-person boxes lettered A to D. The railway publishes only two facts about them, and they are the two that matter: A and D are the window seats, and on down trains (towards Kameoka) C and D face the direction of travel, while on up trains (towards Saga) A and B do. So a window seat facing forward is D going down and A coming back. The operator does not designate a "river side", and we are not going to invent one.
Practical notes: suitcases up to 120 cm total are free on board, but nothing longer than 1 m is allowed at all, so the big check-in bag stays at the hotel. Torokko Arashiyama has 60 steps and no lift between the gate and the platform — use Torokko Saga if that matters. Saga to the bamboo grove is a 10-minute walk; Saga to Torokko Arashiyama on foot is about 20.
Klook and the other resellers: when it's fine, when it's not
A reseller listing that lets you "book" two or three months out is not holding a seat. It is taking your money against the hope of grabbing one when the railway opens sales one month ahead, like everybody else. On a quiet date that works. On a peak November date it can fail, and the cancellation lands weeks later, when the official site is already sold out too. That is the exact failure mode behind every autumn's crop of complaint threads.
Use a reseller when it genuinely helps: a bundled trolley-plus-boat product you do not want to assemble yourself, a card the Japanese checkout refuses, or a low-season date where nothing is at stake. For a peak date, the official site at 00:00 JST is not "one option" — it is the only one that exists at that moment.
Sold out? The fallback ladder
In order. First, refresh the official site for cancellations — free refunds until 23:59 the day before mean stock does come back, unpredictably. Second, turn up at Torokko Saga at 08:35 for a same-day seat, or a standing ticket, which the railway sells in limited numbers once the reserved seats are gone. Third, take the boat instead: same gorge, no reservation required, and honestly the better ride.

The boat is the real answer. ¥6,000 for adults and ¥4,500 for children (toddler to elementary school), roughly 100 minutes from the Kameoka dock down to Arashiyama — 60 minutes when the river is high, 110 when it is low. Online slots close the day before, but walk-up tickets are sold at the dock every operating day on a first-come basis, even when every reseller shows sold out. In November the operator's own advice is to arrive between 08:00 and 09:00.
Timing the two together is easy and the railway spells it out: book the boat about an hour after your trolley departs. The worked example on the boat operator's site is the 09:02 from Saga, arriving Torokko Kameoka 09:25, shuttle bus 09:35–09:45, boat at 10:00. Departures run 09:00 to 15:30 on weekdays from 10 March to 30 November (last boat 14:30 from 1 December); at weekends and on holidays boats leave whenever 24 people have gathered. Minimum height to board is 80 cm, and boats run in rain under a tent but stop for storms or high water.
The local-train alternative, honestly
You will read that you can "just take the JR Sanin line through the same gorge". Not really. The trolley runs on the old Sanin alignment, left disused when JR double-tracked the line; the railway company was founded in 1990 specifically to run tourist trains on the abandoned track. Today's JR trains take the new route, largely in tunnel. Saga-Arashiyama to Umahori is ¥200 and 7 minutes for 7.8 km, with one bright moment as you cross above the river at Hozukyo. It is a cheap, useful connection — Torokko Kameoka is about 8 minutes' walk from Umahori — but it is not a substitute for the ride.

Why did my reseller cancel my Sagano Romantic Train booking?
Because it never had the seat. The railway releases tickets exactly one month before the ride date at 00:00 JST, so a listing sold two months out is a promise to try, not a reservation. When a peak November date sells out in the first minutes, the reseller cancels and refunds — usually weeks after you booked, by which point the official site is empty too.
What time exactly do official tickets go on sale?
Midnight JST, one month ahead, on the same calendar date of the previous month. For 20 November, sales open at 00:00 on 20 October. That is stated in the operator's FAQ in both Japanese and English. Have an account created and be logged in beforehand: the open car and the 09:00 departures go first.
Do cancelled seats come back?

Does the JR Pass cover the Sagano Romantic Train?
