Shipping a box of souvenirs from Japan to the US, UK or Australia works, but it is rarely the cheap hack people expect. A 5 kg EMS box to the US runs about ¥15,100 (~$100) and arrives in 3–4 days; the same by surface mail is ¥5,400 but takes 1–3 months. For most first-timers an extra checked bag is cheaper and simpler. Ship only when the item is fragile, oversized, or your bags are already maxed out.

One thing to clear up first: this is about mailing purchases home internationally. If you just want to move bags between hotels inside Japan, that is a different, much cheaper service — see our guide to domestic luggage forwarding with Yamato. This page is about the box that crosses an ocean.

Should you ship souvenirs home or just pay for extra baggage?

For most trips, pay for the extra bag. A second or third checked bag on a long-haul flight home is roughly $100–200 and holds up to 23 kg — often cheaper per kilo than posting, with no customs paperwork and no waiting weeks. Shipping wins only in specific cases: fragile items you do not want in a suitcase, single oversized pieces, or when your baggage allowance is genuinely full.

Run the actual numbers before you commit. A box heavy enough to justify shipping (8–10 kg) can cost ¥22,000–27,000 by EMS — more than an airline bag. Factor shipping into your overall spend using our two-week Japan budget, because it is an expense many first-timers forget until the post office counter.

EMS vs air parcel vs surface mail: which is cheapest and fastest?

Japan Post gives you four speeds. EMS is fastest and priciest (5 kg to the US = ¥15,100, ~3–4 days). Air parcel is a touch cheaper (¥14,200, ~6 days). SAL / Economy Air sits in the middle (¥7,700, 1–2 weeks). Surface (sea) mail is by far the cheapest (¥5,400) but crawls across in 1–3 months. All four include tracking; EMS tracking is the most detailed.

The rule of thumb: pick EMS or air parcel for anything urgent or fragile, and surface mail for heavy, non-urgent stuff like used clothes, books or ceramics where you do not mind waiting a season. Note SAL is not offered to every country, so confirm availability for your destination when you fill in the label.

How much does it cost to ship to the US, UK or Australia?

The three destinations sit in different Japan Post zones, but US rates are a fair benchmark: a 5 kg EMS box is ¥15,100 (~$100), and 10 kg is ¥27,100 (~$180). Surface mail is dramatically cheaper — ¥5,400 for 5 kg, ¥8,900 for 10 kg. The UK and Australia fall in nearby zones with broadly similar pricing; real Australia-bound travellers report roughly ¥10,000 for an 8 kg box.

Two costs sit on top of postage. First, import tax at the other end (covered below). Second, the box and tape: post offices sell sturdy boxes for a few hundred yen, and you can grab packing tape at any konbini or a ¥100 shop like Daiso. Always check your exact rate on the Japan Post rate tool the day you ship — fuel surcharges shift.

Customs and duties: what do you have to declare?

You itemise everything on the customs label — each item, its quantity and its value. This is where US travellers need to pay attention in 2026: the old $800 "de minimis" duty-free allowance was suspended in August 2025 and then indefinitely on 24 June 2026. Purchased goods mailed to the US now owe import duty at any value, so that box of figures is taxable. Bona fide gifts sent person-to-person keep a narrow exemption.

The UK charges import VAT on goods over £135 (gifts over £39) plus duty above £135. Australia applies GST, with parcels over A$1,000 assessed at the border. One legitimate saver: shipping your own used clothes home usually attracts little or no duty because they are pre-owned personal effects — declare them honestly as such. Undervaluing new purchases is fraud and boxes do get opened.

What can you NOT ship from Japan?

A surprising amount of ordinary souvenir shopping is banned from international mail. Japan Post prohibits perfume, aerosols and sprays, nail polish, sunblock, hair tonic, and alcohol (a total ban on shipments to the US and Canada). Also barred: power banks and loose lithium batteries, e-cigarettes, lighters, matches, fireworks and any pressurised or flammable liquid. Contents are X-rayed after acceptance and offending boxes get returned.

The batteries rule catches people out most. Anime figures, gadgets and electronics with a battery inside face extra scrutiny; staff may ask you to unpack and explain each item, and glues or scented oils need flammability details. If a toy takes button cells, ask at the counter first. When in doubt, carry those items in your hand luggage instead.

Where and how do you actually ship it?

The workhorse is a Japan Post office (yubinkyoku). Buy a box there, pack it, then create your customs label online through Japan Post International Mail My Page (handwritten labels are no longer accepted) — or ask your hotel or a 7-Eleven to print it. Bring the box to the counter, staff paste the labels, you pay, and you get a tracking number. Budget 30–120 minutes; counters can be slow with foreign parcels.

Some hotels — especially larger ones near theme parks — offer a mailing service, and Yamato and DHL can also ship internationally (DHL is fastest but rarely central). Ship near the end of your trip so you are not lugging shopping between cities, and give surface mail a head start of several weeks. Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to ship souvenirs home or buy an extra suitcase?

Usually the suitcase. An extra checked bag (~$100–200, up to 23 kg) beats posting a box of similar weight, and it travels on your flight instead of taking weeks. Ship only for fragile, oversized, or overflow items.

Can I still ship to the US now that the $800 duty-free limit is gone?

Yes, shipping still works — but purchased goods now owe US import duty at any value after the de minimis exemption was suspended in 2025 and indefinitely in June 2026. Some senders report more scrutiny and returned boxes, so factor in the tax and check your carrier still accepts US parcels.

How long does surface (sea) mail from Japan take?

Typically 1–3 months. It is the cheapest option by far (¥5,400 for 5 kg to the US) and reliable for heavy, non-urgent items like used clothes or books. Ship it several weeks before you need it — many travellers post it, fly home, and it arrives weeks later.

Do I have to declare and itemise every single item?

Yes. The customs label requires each item, quantity and value, and Japan Post staff may ask you to reopen the box to confirm it matches. Your home country calculates duty from those declared values, so be accurate — undervaluing is fraud and boxes get opened.

Can I ship perfume, cosmetics, alcohol or figures with batteries?

Perfume, aerosols, nail polish, sunblock and hair tonic are banned, and alcohol cannot be mailed to the US or Canada at all. Power banks and loose lithium batteries are prohibited; figures or gadgets with batteries or glue face extra questions. Carry those in your hand luggage instead.

Where do I actually go to send a box home?

A Japan Post office is the standard choice: buy a box there, create the customs label online via International Mail My Page, and hand it over at the counter. Some hotels offer mailing, and Yamato or DHL also ship abroad. Allow 30–120 minutes at the counter.
